Course Description
This optional course supports incoming MAE students in building career readiness alongside hands-on professional experience through a summer internship. Students will develop job search strategies, industry knowledge, interview skills, workplace etiquette, and personal branding—then apply those skills in a real-world setting.
Alongside virtual class sessions, students can participate in a two-week project with peers hosted by an industry expert partner. Projects are designed to simulate real professional environments and challenge students to apply economic analysis in professional settings.
Course Goals
Master career preparation essentials: networking, résumé and cover letter writing, interview prep, and professional branding
Build practical workplace skills including business writing, problem solving, and critical thinking
Apply those skills in real business contexts: navigating teams, receiving feedback, and communicating results
Micro-Internship Project
The Summer 2026 project, led by a University of Chicago alumnus with experience at leading global financial institutions, places students inside a simulated Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC). Working as a committee, students analyze current U.S. economic data—including inflation, labor markets, and financial conditions—to debate and vote on a Federal Funds Rate recommendation. One student serves as Fed Chair and leads a simulated post-FOMC press conference, fielding questions from a financial journalist and defending the committee's decision. The final presentation is timed to coincide with the Federal Reserve's own policy announcement, grounding the exercise in real-world stakes.
