Open to All College Students

The Legal Writing Competition invites students to adopt the role of Supreme Court clerks writing a draft opinion on a real case. Students review lower court opinions and present, individually or as a team, a written opinion and oral argument to be judged by the Careers in Law team and law school faculty.

Program Timeline

  • December 10, 2026:  Writing Competition Application Opens

  • January 8, 2027: Writing Competition Applications Close

  • January 11: Writing Competition Packet Distributed

  • January 25: Writing Competition Written Opinions Due

  • February 1: Announce Writing Competition Finalists

  • Week of February 8: Writing Competition Oral Arguments

  • February 15: Writing Competition Announce Winners

Open to Third and Fourth Year College Students

The Legal Research & Writing Seminar provides early exposure to Westlaw, a legal research tool used by employers and law schools. Mastering this platform early provides students with an advantage in the hiring and admissions processes. Taught in conjunction with UChicago Law faculty, this 5-session non-credit course emphasizes the fundamentals of writing for the workplace and legal analysis.
