Clinical & Medical Cohort Programs

Beyond the Clinic

This year-long program supports first, second, third, and fourth year students as they explore careers for physicians outside of direct patient care. Each quarter, fellows explore a different general field, including non-patient-facing clinical careers such as pathology, radiology, and anesthesiology, global health careers, and healthcare innovation and administration.

Clinical Service Fellows

This year-long program helps first- and second-year students understand what it means to serve patients. Fellows complete 2-4 hours of clinical volunteering each week during the winter, spring, and summer quarters in Chicago. Volunteer sites include hospitals, clinics, and community organizations, such as Howard Brown Health, Unity Hospice, and CommunityHealth Clinic.

Fellows in Community & Social Medicine

  • Eligibility: 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Year Students

This eight-week summer research program awards 15 students a $5,000 stipend to investigate community health, social sciences, and the social context of health and medicine through projects that vary in nature, being based either in the UChicago hospital system or the broader Chicago community. Previous research experience is not required and students may apply to multiple Fellows internships. Required application materials include a resume, one-page cover letter, and signed Agreement Form.

Arkansas Rural Medicine Program

  • Applications Open: December 14, 2026

  • Applications Close: January 29, 2027

  • Eligibility: 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Year Students

This 8-week summer internship program, which is a part of the Rural Arkansas Internship Program will match students to positions within the St. Bernards Medical Center in Jonesboro, AR to provide direct and indirect patient care. The St. Bernards Healthcare system is currently participating in the Rural Health Transformation Program (RHTP), an initiative to connect 5 healthcare facilities across Northeast Arkansas to upgrade equipment and broaden healthcare access to rural areas of the state. Get a firsthand look at the enhancements the hospital is planning, give insight into their targets for local healthcare shortages, and support them in bridging critical gaps in care.

Scholars in Medicine Program

A competitive-three-year program for motivated students committed to impactful careers in medicine. The program focuses on extracurricular planning, professional formation, and long-term skill-building. Scholars design rigorous and sustainable undergraduate pathways that enable them to apply to medical school at the end of their third year.

Global Health Cohort Programs

Kiphart Collegiate Fellows Program

  • Applications Open: November 15, 2026

  • Eligibility: 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Year Students

The Kiphart Collegiate Fellows Program supports experiential-learning internships in global health and social development, with a preferred focus on low- and middle-income countries.

Fellows receive a stipend of up to $5,000, access to an exclusive job board, and cohort events throughout the fellowship year. Up to 15 students are selected each year, and students of any major are eligible to apply.

Pozen Global Health Scholars Program

  • Applications Open: March 15, 2027

  • Applications Close: April 1, 2027

  • Eligibility: 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Year Students

The Pozen Global Health Scholars Program is a selective track for College students interested in the broad range of careers related to health equity.

Scholars complete skills workshops, attend conferences, participate in innovation challenges, and receive a designation of completion on their transcript at graduation. They also benefit from networking with global health and human development organizations, international summer internships with grassroots nonprofits and multilateral agencies, funding for certifications and conference attendance, and international global health career treks. Students of all majors are encouraged to apply.

Oral Health Cohort Programs

Richmond Scholars Program

  • Eligibility: 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Year Students

Sponsored by the George E. Richmond Foundation, Richmond Scholars provides financial support to students pursuing substantive summer experiences related to oral health with an understanding that oral health as inseparable from whole-person health. Scholars receive a $5,000 stipend to pursue a summer research experience or internship on topics such as dental medicine, oral health equity, and the gut microbiome. Following their summer experience, Scholars present their work at the Oral Health Symposium on campus during their first two weeks of the fall quarter.
