Beyond the Clinic

Applications for Beyond the Clinic will open in September 2026

This year-long program supports students as they explore careers for physicians outside of direct patient care. Each quarter, fellows explore a different general field, including non-patient-facing clinical careers such as pathology, radiology, and anesthesiology, global health careers, and healthcare innovation and administration.

Clinical Service Fellows

Applications for 2026-2027 Clinical Service Fellows will open in September 2026

This year-long program helps first-year students understand what it means to serve patients. Fellows complete 2-4 hours of clinical volunteering each week during the winter, spring, and summer quarters. Volunteer sites include hospitals, clinics, and community organizations in Hyde Park and beyond.

Fellows in Community & Social Medicine

This eight-week summer research program awards 15 students a $5,000 stipend to investigate community health, social sciences, and the social context of health and medicine through projects that vary in nature, being based either in the UChicago hospital system or the broader Chicago community.

Application Timeline & Requirements

  • Applications for research positions through the Careers in Healthcare Fellows program will become available in October and January in Handshake (application opening will be announced in CIH newsletter).

  • Students may apply to as many CIH Fellows internships as they are interested in.

  • Required application materials include resume, 1-page cover letter, and an Agreement Form signed by student applicant.

Note: Additional required materials, as well as application deadlines, and notification timelines, are all at the discretion of the Principal Investigator for the individual opportunity to which a student applies.

Global Health Frontiers

Global Health Frontiers introduces incoming College students to careers in global health and health equity. Whether you are beginning to explore the field or already have a specific interest, the program provides an early entry point into the Global Health Careers community.

Frontiers students attend mentorship events, including a fall welcome dinner with Pozen Global Health Scholars, participate in a summer global health case challenge, and receive funding for a global health internship after their first year.

Katen Scholars Program

Sponsored by the Karen Katen Fund for Science, the Katen Scholars Program supports first, second, and third year students interested in pursuing careers in health, medicine, and science. Scholars are awarded a $5,000 stipend to complete a summer research project at UChicago or with an external organization.

Kiphart Collegiate Fellows Program

The Kiphart Collegiate Fellows Program supports experiential-learning internships in global health and social development, with a preferred focus on low- and middle-income countries.

Fellows receive a stipend of up to $5,000, access to an exclusive job board, and cohort events throughout the fellowship year. Up to 15 first-, second- and third-year students are selected each year, and students of any major are eligible to apply.

Applications are managed by Career Advancement and posted on Handshake during Autumn Quarter.

Pozen Global Health Scholars

The Pozen Global Health Scholars Program is a selective track for College students interested in the broad range of careers related to health equity. The program is open to first-, second-, and third-year students, and students of all majors are encouraged to apply.

Scholars complete skills workshops, attend conferences, participate in innovation challenges, and receive a designation of completion on their transcript at graduation. They also benefit from networking with global health and human development organizations, international summer internships with grassroots nonprofits and multilateral agencies, funding for certifications and conference attendance, and international global health career treks.

The program is supported by a generous gift from Richard (AB’69) and Ann Pozen.

Scholars in Medicine Program

A competitive three-year program for motivated students committed to impactful careers in medicine featuring:

  • Specialized Advising: Regular one-on-one meeting with a Careers in Healthcare adviser.

  • Pre-Health Experiences: Gain direct exposure to medicine.

  • Research: Explore healthcare through biomedical science, policy, economics, community health, or clinical research

  • Clinical Experience: Gain regular exposure to patients through research, volunteering, or paid work.

  • Service: Give back to the community and learn about the needs of vulnerable populations.

  • Healthcare Career Treks: Travel to a city across the US to meet with leading physicians, researchers, and employers.

  • Annual Retreat: Come together as a cohort to reflect on your exploration of medicine and plan for the next academic year.

  • Funded Summer Experiences: Guaranteed funding for two summers to pursue internships or research opportunities.

  • Healthcare Portfolio: Reflect on your growth, set goals, and document your experiences.
