What are my benefits as a UChicago 4+1 Transfer Scholar?
Your benefits as a UChicago 4+1 Transfer Scholar include all the benefits of the 4+1 Scholars program:
A streamlined admissions process to select UChicago master’s degree programs
A $5,000 scholarship toward your master’s program, directly after you have completed your bachelor’s degree
As a 4+1 Transfer Scholar, you will receive specialized programming and support from Career Advancement to help you prepare and choose a program, as well as build lasting connections with your fellow transfer scholars.
Additionally, students admitted to a participating 4+1 master’s program prior to the summer before their last year in the College are guaranteed a one-time $5,000 stipend for an unpaid summer internship or research opportunity.
Will I need to apply again for my master’s degree?
Yes, students admitted to the 4+1 Transfer Scholars program have a streamlined application process to participating master’s programs. This streamlined application enables students to apply to any number of participating master’s programs, without letters of recommendation or application fees. Students who remain a full-time student in good standing and satisfy the GPA and course requirements when applying to the master’s program are eligible for admission.
What do I need to do between now and applying to a master’s program?
Each master’s program has certain GPA requirements and may include prerequisite courses. Learn more about the admissions criteria for each participating master’s program here. Once you apply to your program(s) of interest, your transcript and other materials will be reviewed to ensure that you meet all requirements before formally matriculating into the program. Admitted students will need to pay any deposits required by their specific master’s program to secure their spot.
The program is called “4+1”, does this mean I have to spend four years at UChicago as an undergraduate?
An expected timeframe for completing your bachelor’s degree depends on your official credit evaluation, which is provided to incoming transfer students in mid-summer. Ordinarily, a student entering as a first-year is given 12 quarters (or 4 years) to graduate. For transfer students, this number is discounted by the number of quarters of transfer credit awarded.
Will I be a graduate student and an undergraduate student at the same time?
You will be an undergraduate while earning your bachelor’s degree and enrolled in the College. After you graduate from the College and matriculate into the master’s program, you will be a graduate student.
Can I take a gap year after I graduate from the College and defer starting my master’s program?
The guaranteed master's scholarship will only be available in the year immediately after you graduate from the College. You must enroll that year to receive the scholarship. If you are interested in taking a gap year and foregoing the scholarship, you should make a request in writing directly to your selected master’s program.
How long is my summer internship funding available?
Your funding may be used after being admitted to one (or more) 4+1 master’s program(s) and is available for use in any summer after you matriculate as an undergraduate student in the College and prior to earning your bachelor’s degree.
